A Star Fell Down on Indiana

A star fell down on Indiana
Just like it did in the beginning of time
We all turned out to see what happened
Some of us laughed
Some of us cried
And together we held onto each other's hands
Until the last of us had died

The Sound Effects

From Timmy: "I came across one of the most detestable albums I have ever had to listen to. Horrific, blase, bland, halfhearted renditions of top-40 hits from 1973. All lamely done by a lousy band called the Sound Effects. Apparently, they recorded many albums, each focusing on different years, as advertised on the rear cover of this monstrosity, titled: 'Autumn '73.' " Thanks Timmy!

Familiar tunes decorate this soundtrack to an obscure flick that featured none other than the fabulous Steve Guttenberg.

Would anyone have rips of these they'd be willing to share? If so, please put you link in the comments. And for those of you who hit me up for re-ups, you might get what you want if you contribute. This should be a two-way street.

Despite being produced by Harry Nilsson, arranged by George Tipton and released on Warner Bros., this charming period piece went nowhere. But now it can be yours.

John Davidson

Never thought I'd be into something like this. I mean, all I remember about this dude is that he was a slick game-show host with perfect hair and an Ultra Brite smile. But listening to it you sense that John was saying, "Take me seriously as an artist" in the same way that, say, Jack Jones did when he hooked up with David Gates on "Bread Winners." And it winds up being sort of cool, especially so because the Wrecking Crew is the backing band. At any rate, here's a fresh vinyl rip for you.

One half of the duo featured in the post below, Gary Ogan has a nice yacht-rock thing going on here. Co-produced by Leon Russell, who also contributes keybs. Gary performs most of the rest of the instrumentation.

Sapphics Against Anger

I'm working toward a goal of raising $50 (yep, 50 whole dollars!) to buy some plug-ins for my digital audio workstation. You can help out either by clicking on the DONATE button on this page or heading over to Bandcamp, clicking BUY NOW, and entering any amount you'd like (you'll get my latest album in return). Lend a hand. Thanks.

The Album

Not to be outdone, I'm guessing, by Warner's Loss Leaders series, A&M put together this comp. The label's dedication at the time to artists over hit-makers shines through. Ah, thems were the days.

These are daunting times
That much is certain
History in the making
From the man behind the curtain
No don't put the brakes on
Let us all run riot
When they hand you their deal
Just say you won't buy it

On average, this site attracts about 2,000 page views a day, and from that about as many downloads. If even half of the people who visit here daily spent, say, a dollar to download even one of my albums over on Bandcamp, that would support greatly both the music I make and the records I buy to post here. So next time you download from Mondo for FREE, please think about contributing.

Sing a Song With the Beatles

I bet that, back in the day, I would've bought this one thinking it was an actual Beatles album. I'm sure that's what the label, Tower, was thinking I'd think, too.

The Thomas Group

Here's an album so rare that it doesn't even exist. I comped it from the best sources I could find. Although this Dunhill band never went very far (not even far enough to make a full record), they did appear on Ed Sullivan, they had songwriting help from P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri, and members of the Wrecking Crew - Hal Blaine on drums, Joe Osborne on bass and Larry Knechtel on keyboards - provided backup. Despite all that, oblivion awaited.

Underground

Tower, a subsidiary of Capitol Records, often released music by artists — such as the Standells and the Chocolate Watchband — who were relatively low profile in comparison to those released on the parent label. This compilation, which includes tracks by the late Kim Fowley and early Pink Floyd, demonstrates just how oddball this label was. If you're interested in more from Tower, Rockin' Bandit recently posted an eight-part series that gathers together a boatload of singles.
